How awful of a daily would a naturally aspirated SW20 be? They’re pretty damn cheap and supposedly quite reliable. Amusingly around here they seem to be less expensive than the equivalent Corolla they share a powertrain with. I kinda like the way they drive and this is to replace a Miata so practicality is “whatever” but how are they for reliability, replacement parts, etc. etc.?

The 5s is pretty bulletproof provided you keep good oil in it, the transmission is tough and its a 90's Yota so...you know...well built.

What role the does the sportly fill if not a DD?

The sporty is my DD. Whatever else I get is my wife’s DD and my “fun car” because I can’t daily a manual but still want to drive one every now and then.

Why can't you daily a manual?

You called?
These are amazing to daily. I’ve been dailying mine for almost 2 years now.
144 lb-ft of torque is available pretty consistently across the rev range and it’s certainly “quick enough” for daily driving.
It’s got 2 (two!) trunks, both with plenty of space for groceries. Much more interior space than a Miata too.
The whole car is rock-solid reliable. I got a tune-up on the engine and had some of the worn parts replaced when I bought it, and it’s continued to run strong for 20k miles over 20 months . It’s more reliable than most modern cars I’ve driven.
Most of the parts are shared across the Toyota range so it’s not bank-breakingly difficult to repair in the unlikely event that’s needed.
I haven’t even mentioned how fun it is to drive yet...
Please get one.

They did a Turbo one in the new season of Wheeler Dealers. Ant always adresses some common faults, so it might be worth a watch. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you where to find it.

Ah, I kinda assumed something like that might be the case.

Maybe, and I'm just spitballing here, but maybe, just maybe, if she's going to be the primary driver of it, it should be something that *isn't* known to be a handful for those not familiar with how it drives.

eh. Any car would have been fucked if you yank the wheel left and slam into a wall. It’s not like she was touging on an offramp and the back end came around.

Yeah. Sucks :(

M O T O R T R E N D
I think I did actually watch that. I was annoyed at how they kept referring to it as a japanese ferrari or some crap like that.

Wow the 5S seems to be a pretty torquey little son of a bitch. I absolutely love the color of yours. How many miles are on it?

It’s on Motortrend? Didn’t know that. And yeah, the Japanese Ferrari thing was indeed annoying.

NA SW’s are great daily drivers. 30+ MPG highway, Camry engine parts availability, amazing in the snow * with proper tires*, and IMO stock for stock, the NA exhaust sounds way better than the turbo which is too quiet.

Couldn’t have said it better myself

“Camry Engine” really doesn’t do the motor justice. It’s a big-dispacement, understressed but torquey engine. Like a half-size 1UZ V8.
Mine should hit 160k miles this week. It’s always started up, and never broken down. Since it’s understressed and overbuilt, I don’t have to “baby it” driving around. It just goes and goes and gets 30 mpg with a lead foot.

NA induction note is also perfection. The driver’s-side intake allows you to experience it unmuffled, and it’s addicting.

That's not the point. The point is that it sounds like you're putting your wants above her needs.

We have the same wants, except she cares less than I do about comfort. She wants a cheap ratty NA but I want something with functional AC and a roof that doesn’t leak.

Well, the M iata that she totaled was HIS car so he’s replacing it with something he wants that she’ll use. Keep in mind she had no car of her own. It's perfectly fine if they are both on board.

I completely agree

Awesome daily, no problems, uses common Toyota parts, great fun, more storage than you’d think.
